Emma Dimmock [d.12.1]

Emma was the first child of Eliza Ellis & Joseph Sa(u)nders born December 12th, 1877 at Malt House Yard, Newton, Blackwell, Derbyshire.

In 1881 Emma & her parents Eliza & Joseph were living at Newton, Blackwell, Derbyshire where Joseph was a coal miner. It appears that her mother & father separated & Eliza married John Dimmock as Emma was raised as Emma Dimmock.

Emma & her parents, John & Eliza, had moved to Yorkshire by 1882 & at that time they were living at Methley, Yorks. By 1886 the family were living at 10 Phillips St, Castleford, Yorks where her father was a coal miner.

By 1890 the family had moved north to Co Durham & were living at 12 Queen St, Ryhope.

In 1901 Emma was still living at home, now 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope, Co. Durham. Also at home were her 3 sisters & 1 brother.

In 1907 Emma was still at 29 Tunstall St with her parents & was a witness at the wedding of her younger sister Sarah Ann to Robert Speed Pallister which took place on Christmas Eve at St Paul’s church, Ryhope.

On April 15th, 1908 Emma married James Riseborough at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Mainsforth Terrace, Sunderland. At the time of the wedding James was 29 & a light house keeper & Emma was 30 years old. The address of both was given as 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope. Witnesses at the wedding were G. Riseborough & E.J. Arkley. James was born April 23rd, 1878 at Sunderland, the son of Mary Ann Sutherland (born 1852 at Sunderland) & James Riseborough, a plumber, (born 1850 at Sunderland).

(The Sunderland Echo & Shipping Gazette of August 4th, 1884 reported on a near drowning of James Riseborough, aged 6. He was playing near the South Dock entrance & fell into the water. An alarm was raised & Mr Henry Watts, the Commissioners’ diver rushed to the rescue. He brought James safely to the steps.)

By 1911 Emma was living at 24 Milner St, Acomb, Great Ouseburn, Yorks & at the time of the census James was not at home & her occupation was given as ‘private means'. The whereabouts of James is unknown.

Emma & James had no children of their own but adopted a daughter.

The 1939 register shows Emma & James living at 4 Gordon Terrace, Sunderland & James was now a retired lighthouse keeper. James was part of the coastguard auxiliary service.

Emma, of 26 The Lawns, Seaham, died suddenly on September 8th 1954 in hopital at Sunderland, Co Durham. She was buried in Ryhope Cemetery.

James died in Oct-december 1955 at Sunderland, Co Durham.
